The 5 pits trail
 provides an off-road surface for walkers cyclist,and horse riders. The trail is 5.5 miles linear route from Grassmoor country park toTibshelf ponds Passing  mainly through an agricutural land and woodland  .
The trail can be extended to 7.5 miles by following the route through Williamthorpe pond and Holmewood woodlands
      The trail was created between 1979 and 1989 it follows mainly the route of the Great Central Railway and linked the mineral railways which served the five main collieries of Grassmoor,Williamthorpe,Holmewood , Pilsley and Tibshelf
   It also offers pleasent picnic areas which  are accesable with a car and  parking where you can join  the trail

The trail starts at Grassmoor Country Park and goes south till you get to the Wolfie Pond where you can  turn left and go round the Williamthope pond and Holmewood Woodlands (or carry straight on ) and then rejion the main trail just before the Timber Lane picnic site.Then the trail procceds on to the ponds at Tibshelf.
There are a lot of footpathes 
leading of the trail that you can also explore along the way

A commermoration to Tom Hullatt

Tom's local village of  Tibshelf   have dedicated a one mile section of the  5 pits
 trail between Pilsley and Tibshelf with  two marker stones in coal measures sand
stone kindly donated by the National Trust. In reconising his achievment in
finshing third in Roger Bannister's famous sub four minute mile race at Iffley
 Road Oxford 50 years ago
